HDF
The same fibre idea as MDF, but pressed far denser and harder. HDF is the tough, smooth board hiding under laminate flooring and inside moulded door skins, where surfaces must take wear.

Watch out for
Harder and heavier than MDF and just as water-sensitive — it still swells if it gets wet. Its density also makes it tougher on tools.
Engineer's notes
Think of HDF as MDF's tougher sibling: you meet it as the hard-wearing core of good laminate flooring and quality door skins. Same rule applies though — keep it dry, and it will give you a hard, smooth, durable surface.
