Engineered Wood
MDF
Wood ground to fine fibre and pressed with resin into a perfectly smooth, grain-free board. With no grain and no direction, MDF routes and CNC-carves into crisp detail and takes paint like glass.
The facts
Best uses
- Painted doors & panels
- CNC-cut & routed detail
- Wall panelling
- Speaker boxes
Watch out for
MDF hates water — it swells permanently if it gets wet — holds screws poorly on the edge, and its fine dust needs a proper mask. Never use it anywhere damp.
Engineer's notes
For anything painted with crisp, modern detail — doors, panelling, shaped fronts — nothing beats MDF for a flawless finish, and it CNC-machines beautifully. But I keep it far from kitchens and bathrooms: one leak and it is finished.
